I met Charlie Winston on a trip to Paris. A year later, when he touched down in LA to record his third CD with Tony Berg, he asked me to capture the experience with a series of short films.
The first day I showed up at Tony's studio, Charlie was sitting by the pool, in a pair of jodhphurs and a western shirt. A regular day in Brentwood. I started snapping photos with my Yashica t4. Charlie jumped in the pool, he swam, he read the LA times on a floaty. Our creative synergy was immediate and effortless.
CHALLENGE: Revitalize Charlie's image while staying true to his playful, creative personality. Connect with Charlie's core audience and attract more fans.
As was my habit at the time, I brought the film to the local thai photolab, which hasn't changed their chemistry since Clinton was president. The resulting unintentionally cross-processed photos showed Charlie in a completely new light.
SOLUTION: Keep it fun, drench it in California sun!
Charlie's label commissioned me to shoot more photographs for the then-unnambed cd's marketing campaign. We shot in LA and then we shot in London.
When it came time to shoot the cover photo, we explored the vast empty spaces around Atwater Village and Malibu and East LA for a few days. The process was always organic and intuitive. As close to composing music as photography ever got.
And then the video for 'Hello Alone.' I had written a few concepts for the song already but none of them really resonated with charlie. Then one day, looking at the photos we'd shot, it came to me. The way we worked together, the way Charlie was able to use a space and the way I was able to compose and capture it said something about being alone.
